Looks like Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano is going to take Bucs Job

Greg Schiano has coached Rutgers since the 2001 season and has compiled a 68-67 record there, with winning records in 6 of the last 7 seasons. Schiano in recent years has turned down some high profile coaching jobs in college like Michigan and Miami. Before the Penn State scandal, Schiano was also rumored to say that Penn State was his dream job. Rumor also has it that the Glazer family, the Bucs owners conducted a massive amount of research, reaching out to various NFL people. One of the people they called was Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who spoke highly of Schiano. In recent years, Schiano has produced a lot of NFL talent. Some of these high profile names are WR Kenny Britt, RB Ray Rice, OT Anthony Davis, FB Brian Leonard, CB's Jason and Devin McCourty, and DT Eric Foster.

Gronks Ankle leading up to the Super Bowl

It looks like Gronkowski suffered a high ankle sprain after getting tackled by non- other then Safety Bernard Pollard who infamously was the tackler on Tom Brady and Wes Welker's knee injuries. Gronkowski was able to come back in the game but was held with out a catch for the remainder of the game and was seen after the game in a walking boot. This injury was very similar to that of QB Ben Roethlisberger's ankle injury towards the end of the season. Roethlisberger was able to manage the pain and was able to play through it even though you could tell he was not as mobile. Because the Super Bowl is in 2 weeks not 1, Gronkowski has the benefits of more rest and more treatments for it. He stated he was ready to go after the game and if I were a betting man I would guarantee he will be out there Super Bowl Sunday.

Knicks win by 33 and Carmelo has 1 point...Wait what?

Carmelo Anthony had a career low 1 point last night as the Knicks trounced the Charlotte Bobcats 111-78. Tyson Chandler had a great game against his old team scoring 20 and following it up with 17 rebounds. Stoudemire and Fields both had 18 points in the blowout."Sometimes defenses are going to load up on him(Anthony) because they understand he's our number one option," said Chandler. "So when they load up and he hits the open guy like he did tonight, we're still effective - and he's still effective - because of that."

AFC Championship - Who's got the Edge?

The Baltimore Ravens will come into Foxboro on Sunday to take on the New England Patriots. Sports Media Pros will discuss who has the edge at various Positions.

Quarterback
NE Tom Brady vs BALT Joe Flacco
Tom Brady owns more quarterback record then all active quarterbacks combined. His playoff record speaks for his self at a 15-5 record, 6 AFC championship appearances, and of course his 3 Superbowl rings. When it is all said and done, Brady might go down as the greatest to ever play the game. As for Flacco, he has a pretty good accurate deep ball but has problems staying consistent and tends to get easily rattled in games.
Edge : Patriots

Running Back
NE BenJarvis Green-Ellis, Stevan Ridley, Danny Woodhead vs BALT Ray Rice
The Patriots as of late have not really had any recollection of a running game with rookie Ridley getting the bulk of the carries but he has fumbled the ball lately. Ray Rice is a jack of all trades back, great down hill runner, and great in the passing game after leading all AFC running backs in all- purpose yards this year.
Edge: Ravens

WR/TE
NE Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez vs BALT Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, Dennis Pitta
Wes Welker lead the league in catches with 122, Gronkowski is an unstoppable force that lead the league in touchdowns with 17 and broke the tight end yards record. Hernandez is a hybrid that plays multiple positions for the Patriots. For Baltimore, rookie Torrey Smith has been a great deep threat this year even though he didn't have a particular good 1st playoff game.
Edge: Patriots

Defense
The Patriots defense especially the pass defense was a league worst this year, but has played well as of late especially with the return of Safety Patrick Chung. The Ravens on the other hand have been in the top 3 in total defense the entire year lead by Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Ed Reed.
Edge: Ravens

Coaching:
Bill Belichick vs John Harbaugh
Belichick has won 13 or more games with the Patriots 5 out of the last 9 seasons, a level of consistency that is unmatched with anyone in the league. He has taken some heat though this year for his defense being a league worst considering he has been known as a defensive guy. Harbaugh has also been recently consistent making the playoffs every season he has been the head coach, this being the only season he has won the division.
Edge: Patriots

Recap Of A Crazy Divisional Weekend

San Francisco 49ers 36 New Orleans Saints 32
San Fran capitalized early on with turnovers taking a early 17-0 lead, then Drew Brees roared back and cut the deficit to 3 at half-time. In the 4th quarter with 2 minutes left and the Saints up 24-23, 9ers QB Alex Smith scampers for a 28 yard rushing td. About 15 seconds later, the Saints get the ball back and Drew Brees heaves up a prayer to Tight End Jimmy Graham who comes down with it and runs for a 66 yard touchdown to put the Saints up 32-29 with 1:37 left. Alex Smith and the 9ers then drove down the field and with 14 seconds left, Smith threw a dart to Tight End Vernon davis for the game winning touchdown.

New England Patriots 45 Denver Broncos 10
This game was over 1:50 into the 1st quarter when Brady drove the Pats down the field and threw the first of his 6 td passes, this one going to Wes Welker. Tight End Rob Gronkowski would catch 3 others. As for Tim Tebow, he was getting chased around all night and got dropped 5 times.

Baltimore Ravens  20 Houston Texans 13
Baltimore took at 17- 13 lead at half-time and after that it turned into a defensive struggle between two great defenses. Baltimore forced rookie QB T.J. Yates to throw 3 interceptions including the last one which occurred with 2 minutes left in the 4th in the end zone to safety Ed Reed.

New York Giants 37 Green Bay Packers 20
The Giant defense harassed the once vaunted Green Bay offense all day by forcing 4 turnovers, 3 of them forced fumbles and sacking Aaron Rodgers 4 times. On offense, the GMEN also succeeded with Eli Manning having a great day, throwing for 330 yard and 3 tds, one of them coming on a Hail Mary to end the first half that Hakeem Nicks caught. The Green Bay Packers in my opinion were not ready to handle the cold that is the Frozen Tundra at Lambeau after the last two years having all their playoff games on the road.

Jeff Fisher chooses Rams over Phins

As first reported by SI’s Peter King, Jeff Fisher ended several days of tug-of-war between the Dolphins and Rams by accepting the St. Louis’ head coaching job.
Both St. Louis and Miami had been putting the full-court press on Fisher since the end of the regular season — the Rams let former coach Steve Spagnuolo go the day after completing a disappointing 2-14 season; the Dolphins fired Tony Sparano in mid-December.
The Titans bought out the final year of Fisher’s contract prior to 2011, ending a 17-year marriage between the two sides. Fisher took over as head coach of the Houston Oilers in 1994, then remained in that position when the franchise relocated to Tennessee in 1997. He posted a 142-120 overall record with the Titans, as well as three division titles and an AFC championship.
Fisher’s choice of St. Louis over Miami may have boiled down to control. The Dolphins have been a franchise in flux recently under current general manager Jeff Ireland. St. Louis, meanwhile, does not have a GM in place — and Fisher likely will now have a hand in deciding who gets that job.

Barry Larkin elected to Hall of Fame

Barry Larkin was elected to the Hall of Fame yesterday with 86.4 percent of the vote.  Larkin spent 19 seasons in the majors all with the Cincinnati Reds. Larkin was known as one of the best hitting shortstops of the 90's. He has a career .295 average with 2,340 hits, 198 homers, and 379 stolen bases. Barry was also a great post season player batting .338, with 24 hits and 71 appearances in 4 series. He took home the NL MVP award in 1995 by hitting .319 with 15 homers, 66 RBI, and 51 stolen bases. Larkin might not have been a top 5 player of his generation but he played the game the right away during the height of the steroid era.

Penn State Hires Pats OC Bill O'Brien

State College, PA (AP)-New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien has agreed to become Penn State's first new head football coach in nearly a half-century.
Two people in the NFL with knowledge of the search told The Associated Press on Friday that O'Brien has told them he plans to replace fired coach Joe Paterno. Another person told the AP terms and details still needed to be set, that nothing was official and there was no signed contract.
The persons spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the search.
ESPN, citing unnamed sources, first reported Thursday night an official announcement would be made Saturday, and that O'Brien would remain with the Patriots as an assistant through the postseason. Two people have told the AP the report was credible.
Division I's winningest coach with 409 victories, Paterno was fired Nov. 9 by university trustees following 46 seasons in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. O'Brien has no apparent ties to Penn State and a proud program tarnished by a scandal that also led to the departure of school President Graham Spanier.

Sports Media Pros NFL Playoff Power Rankings

1. Green Bay Packers
Pretty obvious choice here, Aaron Rodgers and Co. have been on cruise control for the passed month and a half.

2. New Orleans Saints
As of right now the Saints are playing the best football in the NFL and are the biggest threat to the Packers in the NFC. Can this team play away from the Superdome though? The offense led by Drew Brees has has been much different when it is outside in the elements.

3. New England Patriots

Blah, Blah, Blah  their defense is bad and gives up a ton of yards. But the fact of the matter is this team has scored 30 or more points in 12 games this year tied for the most times in a season (07 Pats, 99 Rams). They are the odds on favorite to win the AFC. Oh and they have Tom Brady.

                                                          4. San Francisco 49ers
Can't really say much more about what has already been said about 1st year Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, he took a dysfunctional underachieving team to a 13 win season with a 1st round bye. He also is doing this with QB Alex Smith mind you.

5. Baltimore Ravens
Being able to sweep Pittsburgh this year was a huge deal for Baltimore and were able to secure a first round bye because of it. Running Back Ray Rice will most likely be his normal beastly self in the playoffs but the question is what kind of Quarterback play will the Ravens get out of Joe Flacco?

6. Detroit Lions
The opening round game between the Lions and Saints should be a great high scoring game. QB Matthew Stafford has really come into his own this year throwing for 5,000 yards and 41 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball , the D line featuring Ndamukong Suh and Cliff Avril has to play big in the playoffs for the Lions to succeed.

                                                           7. Pittsburgh Steelers
With Big Ben already nursing a ankle injury, losing Rashard Mendenhall for the entire playoffs was a huge blow for Pittsburgh. To go on top of that leading tackler and Safety Ryan Clark will not play agianst Denver because of his Sickle Cell Anemia disease and can't handle the altitude.

8. Atlanta Falcons
Matt Ryan and the Falcons have made the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years and have yet to get win. A big difference maker for them this January if they want to change their recent drought is rookie WR Julio Jones. The reason they gave up so much for him in the draft was to get them over the hump and he needs to come through with some big catches.

9.New York Giants
The Giants barley sneaked into the playoffs after starting the season 6-2 but have rallied with huge wins against the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys to win the division. Jason Pierre-Paul has really been a dominant force on the defensive line this year for the GMEN who have been without Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck for some parts of the year and have needed JPP to step up.

10. Houston Texans
Considering this team lost QB's Matt Schaub, Matt Leinart, DE/OLB Mario Williams, and WR Andre Johnson for most of the year and still get to host a playoff game is pretty amazing and shows you what a great job Wade Phillips has done with this defense this year.

11. Cincinnati Bengals
Before the season started nobody thought the Bengals were even going to win 3 games let alone 9 and get the final wild card spot. They have rallied behind rookie QB Andy Dalton and WR A.J. Green to pull off a amazing turn around and have a great shot to upset the Houston Texans.

12. Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos will have home field against the Pittsburgh Steelers and thats about all they have going for them in this game. Tim Tebow who has answered a lot of critics this year will get a steady rush from Pittsburgh Defensive Coordinator Dick Lebeau all game and will most likely be running around for dear life.

Can the Patriots end their recent playoff drought?

The 2011 New England Patriots as usual did what they always do during the season; rack up wins, win the AFC east, and secure home field in the playoffs with a 1st round bye. But in recent years New England has struggled getting a win in January. Long gone are the days of Teddy Bruschi, Ted Johnson, Ty Law, Richard Seymour, and Mike Vrabel on defense, which was the staple of the 3 championships that New England won in the early 2000's. Since 2007, New England has transformed into a offensive aerial attack under QB Tom Brady. Since the 2007 Super Bowl, the Patriots are 0-3 in the playoffs. Those losses coming in the '07 Super bowl against the New York Giants, '09 wild card round game at home against the Baltimore Ravens, and last years divisional round game at home against the New York Jets. All of these losses were very similar in that all 3 teams pressured and hit Tom Brady, not allowing him to get comfortable early in the game and forcing him to make errant throws. Brady is most likely one of the most mechanically sound throwers of all time, so this is one of the big reasons they have not won in January. Also as of late the Patriots offense has been starting slow then getting into its usual groove after the first quarter when they go to no-huddle. I think for the Patriots to win on January 14th, they need to keep Brady comfortable early by using short quick passes to WR Wes Welker and TE/H-back Aaron Hernandez and also establishing the running game with rookie RB Stevan Ridley to set up the play-action for vertical passing. The Patriots should also go into their No- Huddle offense early and often to tire out whomever's pass rush. With a early lead, the defense which has though been bad at times can create turnovers. The Defense lead by DT Vince Wilfork has caused 23 interceptions and 9 forced fumbles on the year.

Sports Media Pros NFL Awards

Most Valuable Player Award
Co-Winners- Aaron Rodgers/GB and Drew Brees/NO- QB
Last time two players split the award was in 2003 when Peyton Manning and Steve McNair took home the award but it looks like it will happen again with both these players having played on such a high level.
Rodgers: 68.3 cmp %, 45/6 td/int, 4,643 yards, 122. 5 QB rating (record)
Brees: 71.2 cmp % (record), 46/14 td/int, 5,476 yards (record), 110.6 QB rating
Runner Up: Tom Brady: 65.6 cmp %, 39/12 td/int, 5,235 yards, 105. 6 QB rating

Defensive MVP
Winner - Justin Smith/SF - DE
Could have given the award to more flashy sack artist guys like DeMarcus Ware or Jared Allen but they played on bad defenses. San Francisco has been the best defensive unit the entire year and Justin Smith has been the one of the main reasons why. His veteran leadership has brought the 49ers back into the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
Smith: 58 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles
Runner- up: Jared Allen/MIN-DE 63 tackles, 22 sacks, 4 forced fumbles

Offensive Rookie of the Year
Winner- Cam Newton/CAR- QB
Many thought Newton would be a bust some even calling him the next JaMarcus Russell!! But what he did as a rookie in the passing game and running game for the Panthers was something a rookie QB has never done before.
Newton: 4.051 passing yards (rookie record), 21/17 td/int, 706 rushing yards, 14 rushing tds (QB record)
Runner-up: Andy Dalton/CIN- QB 3,398 yards, 20/13 td/int, 80.4 QB rating

Defensive Rookie of the Year
Winner- Von Miller/DEN- LB
From week 1 on Miller has been giving offensive lines and Quarterbacks tons of trouble with his amazing quickness and agility.
Miller: 65 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles
Runner-up: Aldon Smith: 36 Tackles, 14 sacks, 2 forced fumbles

Comeback Player of the Year
Winner- Steve Smith/CAR- WR
Once one of the most highly regarded receivers in the game, Smith began to decline in recent years because of injuries and problems at the quarterback position in Carolina. But with the emergence of Cam Newton, Smith was once again back atop the receiving leader board.
Smith: 79 catches, 1,394 yards, 7 tds
Runner-up: Reggie Bush/MIA-RB: 216 att, 1,086 yards, 6 rushing tds, 5.0 yards/carry

Breakout Player of the Year
Winner- Rob Gronkowski/NE-TE
2011 will go down as the year of the QB but it was also the year of the Gronk. Gronkowski had the most prolific season by a Tight End in NFL history. He used his unusual 6-6 frame and his remarkable speed to make him uncoverable and a nightmare for the rest of the league.
Gronkowski: 90 catches, 1,327 yards(tight end record), 17 tds (tight end record)
Runner- up: Jimmy Graham/NO-TE: 99 catches, 1,310 yards, 11 tds

Coach of the Year
Winner- Jim Harbaugh/SF
In Harbaughs first year with the 49ers he took a underachieving team and turned them into a 13 win team. The 9ers are back in the playoffs with a bye week and the fans can thank Harbaugh as the main reason.
